Hey Reader, Let’s be honest—the world of productivity is littered with rules and hacks. If you’ve dabbled in this space, as I have, you’ve seen all kinds of advice. I’ve read hundreds of productivity books over the years. There’s so much out there; it’s almost overwhelming. Let’s face it: a lot of these methods just don’t work in real life. I know this. I juggle a real life like many of you, with kids, work, and many tasks. What a lot of productivity experts don’t talk about is that real life is messy. And you can’t always hack your way to productivity in real life. So today, I want to cut through the noise. There are 3 simple “2-Minute Rules.” They work in real life, for real people. They’ve helped me stop procrastinating and get things done. I built high-income skills, which led to my dream career and my business. I hope that these are just as useful to you in your everyday life. 1. The “If It Takes 2 Minutes, Do It Now” RuleThis one’s borrowed from David Allen’s book, Getting Things Done, and it’s deceptively simple. If something on your to-do list can be done in two minutes or less, just do it right away instead of putting it off for later. Here’s why it works. Many small tasks—like responding to a quick email, tidying your desk, taking out the trash—are so quick to do, but we often procrastinate on them. We delay them for later, when later comes, these little tasks pile up. Suddenly, a tiny task turns into a big mental burden, and you’re wasting time thinking about it more than it would take to just do it. Implementing this rule cleared my mind of clutter. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by a long to-do list, I could get rid of the small tasks. And there’s a psychological benefit here: when you handle these quick tasks, you build momentum. You start feeling productive, and that energy bleeds into tackling bigger tasks. 2. The “Two-Minute Start” RuleOne of the toughest parts of any task is just getting started. The longer we wait, the bigger and more intimidating the task seems. But here’s the trick: if you commit to just two minutes of effort, you make it far easier to begin. Often, what starts as two minutes turns into five, ten, or even an hour of productive work. The key is lowering the barrier to entry. For example, when I have a big presentation or keynote to prepare, I used to put it off because the thought of creating an entire presentation felt overwhelming. But with the Two-Minute Start rule, I shift my focus. Instead of thinking about the whole project, I ask myself, “What can I do in just two minutes?” Maybe it’s outlining the main points or brainstorming a few key ideas. Once that’s done, I often find myself sticking with it longer. And when the deadline approaches, having that initial outline in place makes the rest of the work so much easier. This rule doesn’t just help you start—it helps you build momentum, which is half the battle. 3. The “2-Minute Closing Rule”The idea is that at the end of any work session or task, you spend two minutes closing everything down properly. Let’s say you just finished a work session or a meeting. Take two minutes to organize your notes, schedule any to-dos for follow-ups in your tasks, put away materials, or file the documents. The goal is to bring closure to the task and leave things tidy for the next time you return. When you don’t finish tasks cleanly, they linger in the back of your mind. You feel like you’re leaving things undone, which creates mental clutter. Closing tasks properly frees up your cognitive load, giving you more mental space to focus on what’s next. I’ve found this especially helpful when working on long-term projects or when moving from one project to the next throughout the day. No more lingering stress, no context switching, and no cluttered thoughts. Next StepsThese rules focus on action, momentum, and completion. You’re no longer stuck in the mental loop of “what do I do next?” or “I’ll do it later.” You take action now, and the compounding effect is huge. Productivity isn’t about working harder; it’s about making tiny, consistent choices that snowball into big results over time. Each of these 2-Minute Rules removes friction and helps you move forward without overthinking. You can implement all three of these this week:
